Number of hours : 0

ECTS Credits : 4

School :École des Ponts ParisTech
Analyse et conception de système de transport
Teaching site :
To provide a global understanding of the hydrologic cycle
To get acquainted with the main hydrological models (deterministic, conceptual, and stochastic)
To acquire a know-how about methods and tools used to solve the following questions :
risk evaluation in flood and drought studies
water ressources management
optimal operation of reservoirs for single or multiple uses
hydrologic forecasting
This knowledge and know-how is essential for those who will work on questions related to " water " in territory planning, natural and industrial risk management, water uses, including energy, and environmental management, in other words, for those who prepare themselves to work for International or European institutions, State or local public services, water agencies or basin organisations, great industrial or engineering water companies.

This course provides for 1/3 basic notions (understanding of phenomena and issues), 1/3 detailed descriptions of modelling tools, and 1/3 exercises and practice to get a real know-how. The main topics presented are:
Operational hydrology today: what are the major questions?
Climatology, hydrologic cycle and hydrological regimes at the planet scale.
Rainfall-runoff generation processes at the plot and watershed scales.
Groundwater systems dynamics and modelling.
Measurements in hydrology: techniques and quality checks.
Rainfall-runoff modelling.
Stochastic processes and risk evaluation for flood and drought studies.
Optimal management of renewable water resources.
Flood and drought forecasting
.
