The engineer's work within a company


The course aims to develop knowledge and reflective thinking concerning engineers' work within a company:
What is asked of them? What do they really do? What difficulties do they need to overcome? Who do they work with? How are they assessed?

With inputs from humanities and social sciences (history, sociology and work psychology in particular), this course examines the following topics:
  • History of the engineering profession
  • The engineer's work: conception, production, regulation
  • Being a manager, project coordinator, or executive: a question of work supervision
  • Work and the consultants' role

    Pedagogical approach:
  • Theoretical knowledge provided by the lecturers;
  • Reading of articles.
  • Analysis of company cases
  • Participation of professionals
  • Use of various media (newspaper articles, documentary films)

    Level required:
    This course is a follow-up from the seminar "Understanding the Firm" (HSS1), but can also be taken on its own.
    It is aimed at students wishing to work for a company after their studies.
    It is strongly recommended to students who wish to do their third-year corporate research internship with the HSS Department.

    Mode of assessment :
  • Course attendance and participation (30%)
  • Interviewing of a professional (30%)
  • Written exam (40%)
