M2 Water, Air, Pollution and Energy at local and regional scales (WAPE-OACOS)
Mecanique et Physique pour l'Environnement
Océan, Atmosphère, Climat et Observations Spatiales - WAPE

Site Principal du Programme :
Contexte : The future of our society is conditioned by the accurate knowledge of the laws and interactions governing the evolution of our natural environment. The development of this knowledge involves observation, experimental, analysis and modeling techniques, covering global as well as regional and local scales. In this general framework, the proposed Master's mention presents the dynamic, physical and chemical processes involved in the evolution of atmosphere, water and air pollution at local and regional scales, and their links with the energetic problem. Up to date methods for meteorological modeling and prevision can then be considered. Observation techniques and innovative developments are also described, studied and tested. This Master's program is a well-adapted formation for the study of the water and atmospheric environment subject to climate changes. The program is jointly organised with Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) within the specialty OACOS co-accredited with UPMC, Ecole Normale Supérieure, Ecole des Ponts-ParisTech & ENSTA.

Objectifs : The objective of this second-year M2 specialty program (60 ECTS) of the Master of Environmental Mechanics & Physics is to give students an advanced knowledge of the laws and interactions governing the evolution of our natural environment at local and regional scales to prepare them for a successful career in academia or industry. All courses are taught in English by prominent scholars who are internationally recognized in their field.

Contenu : An academic advisor is assigned to each student in order to help him/her select a coherent set of courses which is most appropriate to his/her inclination and career goals. Courses take place during semester S3 (September - February). During the last semester S4 (March – August), students have to complete a six-month internship in France or abroad, which concludes with the defense of a Master’s thesis. Each curriculum consists in 30 ECTS of compulsory or elective courses chosen in the list below, and a 6 month research internship for 30 ECTS.

The other tracks of the OACOS specialty (french taught) :

Compétences acquises : It is expected that graduates of the program will have acquired the capacity to design effective, physically based models for a great variety of facets of the environment. They will have learnt to critically assess the relevance and validity of different approaches to complex environmental problems. They will be able to determine the pertinent parameters, to develop efficient numerical algorithms or to select the appropriate measurement techniques that are relevant to impact studies or societal demands. Even more importantly, they will have acquired a sound physical understanding of environment physics. Finally, they will be able to work and communicate effectively in an English-speaking environment.

Débouchés : The advanced training offered by the program makes students well prepared to begin a professional career in industry. Alternatively, graduates of the program may choose to study for a doctoral degree, which opens the way for a research career in the academic or industrial world.Students from this specialty shall be recruited in public or private research institutions, in companies or agencies concerned with environmental problems (“polluting” industries, local authorities, banks, insurances, …) interested in hiring specialist in environment and climatic risks.

Atouts de la formation : At Ecole Polytechnique, the program is widely based on the research and tutorial resources of the Dynamic Meteorology Laboratory (LMD).
